Gameplay

Mechanics[]

  • The main goal is to clear a level by defeating all enemies.
  • In total there are 20 levels to beat. Each time four levels lead up to a boss battle. Each of those four parts also has it's own soundtrack.
  • You are limited to moving left, right, jumping, dropping down platforms and shooting.
  • Shooting will freeze enemies in place. After a short period of time they will free themselves and move again. If shot six times an enemy is fully frozen in a ball-shape. They can be pushed and will roll across the screen, changing direction each time they collide with a wall or the left and right screen border. On their way each enemy that comes in contact with the ball will be defeated. After colliding enough times the ball will burst, leading to the defeat of the enemy inside.
  • If a rolling ball, player or any enemy falls down the bottom screen border, it will drop down form the upper screen border again.
  • There's a very generous time limit for each level of 60 time units for regular levels and 99 time units for boss levels. As an in-game time unit is more than one second long, the time usually doesn't run out.[2]
  • Your health is displayed as red hearts, starting with ten. Touching an enemy will result in you losing one heart and gaining a short time of invincibility. Running out of all lives will result in a game over.

Collectables[]

Fire up star

Fire up Power-up

Whenever an enemy is defeated it drops one item that grants you points towards your highscore. The more enemies an ice-ball has taken out the more points its dropped item will give.[2] Besides point-based collectables there are four unique upgrade items that can always be dropped instead:

  • Fire up (Blue/Purple Star) will cut the times required to fully freeze an enemy from six to three.
  • Range up (Red/Yellow Star) will increase the ice-projectiles range.
  • Speed up (Red Shoes/Socks) will increase your movement speed.
  • Life up (Green Star/with Red Heart) will restore one heart on your life counter, as long it's below ten.

Picking up any of these items when the corresponding ability is maxed out will award points instead.

Additionally, taking out every enemy with a single ice-ball will drop a large Special Chest full of items from the top of the screen. Enemies occasionally drop small chests when defeated, which can be shot repeatedly to release multiple score bonus items. Picking up either chest awards only a small point bonus.

Enemies[]

Showcase

All 8 Enemies

  • The five grounded enemies (bottom) start to move left or right, change direction when facing a wall, and can jump or drop at random if possible.
  • The three airborne enemies (top) move towards the player and can stop at random intervals.
  • Some enemies stop moving to perform unique attacks at random.
  • List of enemies:
    • Fox walk back and forth.
    • Elf run back and forth.
    • Dog can throw a projectile.
    • Alien can shoot lightning.
    • Knight can fly.
    • Imp can breath fire.
    • Goblin can swing it's scythe.
    • Ghost fly quickly.
  • Enemy behaviour in general is RNG-heavy, making levels challenging and varied.

Bosses[]

Ice Queen

End Boss: Ice Queen

All four bosses summon enemies if none are present and take damage from rolling ones. If their health bar is drained (shown as a number of spades ♠) the boss is defeated and drops a plenitude of items similar to a Special Chest. Additionally each boss shows unique abilities:

  • Clown can perform high jumps.
  • Ice Cream Sundae can shoot ice-balls on the player below.
  • Vampire switches between perching and hovering at the players position, making him vulnerable.
  • Ice Queen can teleport, move above the player to drop ice-balls, and lets icicles rain after getting hit.

Glitches[]

Double Kill Softlock[]

If the last two enemies are turned into balls, rolled and defeated at about the same time the game won't progress to the next level. This is notorious in levels where using two ice-balls is effective, like 1-2, 2-4 and 3-5 (Dracula Boss), especially when going fast e.g. in a speedrun.[2]

Grinding Technique

Grinding on a slope

Grinding[]

When rolling an enemy over a slope, it can happen that the ball will phase through it and collide with the levels geometry a lot in a short time, often leading to an instant defeat. This appears to be a random occurrence and very useful when wanting to get rid of an enemy quickly, while an annoyance when trying to line up a streak, e.g. on 2-3 where one ball can easily take out every enemy but in most cases has to roll up a slope first. Freezing an enemy while it's mid-air touching a platform can result in a grind as well.[2]

Phasing[]

On 1-4 Elf enemies always fall through the floor when hitting the left wall of the lowermost platform and changing direction from left to right. It has been reported that the Clown boss very rarely phases through its floor as well.[2]

Boss Double Kill[]

If a boss is down to its last health point and gets hit by two rolling enemies, two showers of bonus/collectable items will be released. This glitch can be exploited to achieve high scores.

Trivia[]

  • Miniclip created another game with the same concept which is stone age themed and called "Caveman".
  • The Miniclip page features a full walkthrough video (which may or may not work).[1]
  • As of December 31st 2020 and Adobe Flash being discontinued, Deep Freeze no longer works properly on the official Miniclip website. However the game can still be played with a file and flash-player or the Flash Game Archive.[2]
  • With its short length, varied levels and quick gameplay it's not only a classic amongst flash games, but also well suited for speedrunning.[2]

Wiki History[]

  • The Deep Freeze wiki was first created in September of 2009.
  • Until August 2021 it barely featured any content when it was majorly overhauled by Any% speedrun world record holder Jace174.
